About ASD
-------------------------------------

The American School Directory is the Internet guide to all 106,000 K-12 schools, providing information and communication for teachers, students, parents, local communities and families planning a move.

The American School Directory (ASD) is sponsored by Computers For Education, IBM, Innisbrook Wraps, Vanderbilt University, and endorsed by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. With over 106,000 individual Web Sites, this revolutionary Internet resource provides every K-12 school in America, public and private, a free Internet presence and identity. Loaded with pictures, maps, art, information, calendars, etc., ASD contains over 2,500,000 pages of useful content.

Now every school in America, whether they have an Internet connection or not, has an equal opportunity to further develop and utilize the many features of their free ASD Web Site. There is no need for commercial software or any knowledge of HTML programming. If necessary, publishing and updating may be done on a home computer or at a public library. Comprehensive online training materials have been developed by Apple Computer. The ASD Web Site Advisor's Guide can be found in the ASD Resource Guide.

Press Releases: A list of press releases highlighting various aspects and features of the American School Directory and your school's ASD Web Site.

Information: A school's ASD Web Site provides accurate and up-to-the minute information including School Information, School News, Calendars, Sports Schedules, Clubs and Organizations and much more. From fax numbers to a local Map, a school's ASD Web Site is a valuable resource. The Education Connection, developed by the Learning Technology Center at Vanderbilt University, provides a robust index of educational Web Sites, classroom Teacher Tools, professional development resources and the Challenge Zone, an original, interactive classroom curriculum.

Communication: N2Mail provides an opportunity for every teacher, student and family member to have a free, lifetime e-mail address without owning a computer. N2Mail enables private, password protected, e-mail services that eliminate the need for computer ownership or e-mail software. One Internet connected computer can serve dozens of N2Mail users. E-mail, including attachments, may be sent, received and stored by logging on the N2Mail Web Site. N2Mail may be accessed from a school, home, work, friend or neighbors computer. What are you N2?

Presentation: Much like a yearbook presents a showcase of the past school year, a school's ASD Web Site provides an active showcase for current events. From student artwork and creative writing in the Creative Corner, to Digital Snapshots and Create-A-Note in the Online Yearbook, the school is presented in a colorful, interactive medium.

Community: Similar to the one-room school house of days gone by, an ASD Web Site becomes a "commons" where valuable community information relating to all aspects of local community life has a home. From Community News articles, photos, announcements, calendars and even obituaries, the school can once again be the center of the community network.

Alumni: A direct link to school alumni is made through the American Alumni Directory (AAD). Providing a fully interactive Alumni Web Site for all 106,000 K-12 schools, the AAD will connect past students with the current activities and needs (i.e. Wish List) of their former school. The AAD also provides every K-12 alumni an easy way to locate and communicate with friends and former classmates.

Revenue: A school's ASD Web Site can provide significant new funding opportunities for technology and other needs. Local Sponsors and Web Business Cards provide a valuable service for local businesses, while benefiting the school. The Wish List allows a school to make specific needs known to parents, community, businesses and alumni. The ASD School Store funds new school technology through worldwide, online consumer purchases of books, family magazines, family videos and educational software by school families, community members and alumni. There are no commercial messages directed at students on any ASD School Web Site and no money is ever collected or handled by students, teachers or schools.

Hosting: The ASD is hosted at the same IBM site that hosted the 1996 Olympic Games on a massively parallel processing super computer (SP) with a dedicated DS-3 Internet connection. This multiple node machine is capable of providing password protected home pages and e-mail communication for over 2.5 million teachers and 52 million students.
